SOA Tanzania is excited to announce the remarkable lineup of speakers for the upcoming Ocean Bootcamp 2024, set to empower young Tanzanians to lead in ocean conservation, climate activism, and sustainable development. The event, running from September 23rd to 29th, will bring together a diverse group of ocean advocates, environmental leaders, and changemakers who are shaping the future of ocean health and sustainability. Meet the passionate individuals who will be sharing their knowledge, inspiring action, and guiding our participants toward meaningful environmental impact.
The Our Ocean Bootcamp 2024 is a flagship event hosted by Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) Tanzania, aimed at empowering young Tanzanians to become ocean and climate activists. With the generous support of The Urban Movement Innovation Fund (UMI Fund) and The African Europe Foundation, this Bootcamp will provide participants with crucial skills in ocean conservation, climate advocacy, and community action.
1. Simone Phoré
Simone Phoré is the Programme Executive for Climate and Development at the Africa Europe Foundation, supporting the growth of the Foundation’s portfolio of projects with a strategic focus on programme implementation in the thematic areas of Climate and Sustainable Development, notably, Ocean Governance, Blue Economy, Agri-food systems, Climate adaptation and Sustainable Energy transition. Before joining AEF, Simone worked as a Climate Change Researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) focusing on resource governance issues, particularly in the field of blue economy, and coastal ecosystems-based adaptation in the national climate responses of SADCs coastal states. She has also worked as a Scientific Project Manager for the Italian research center, Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC), coordinating and supporting international projects and initiatives related to the marine environment and climate change fora, from global, regional to coastal scales.
2. Brandon Levy
Brandon Levy, Chief Program Officer at Sustainable Ocean Alliance, is an advocate for ecological regeneration and personal growth. Through his work at SOA, he has built leadership programs and grant initiatives that support ocean innovators in over 60 countries. As a sought-after public speaker and mentor, Brandon has inspired countless young leaders to pursue ecological solutions and self-actualization. His unique approach, combining climate technology and mindfulness, offers a transformative experience for anyone aspiring to create positive environmental change.
3. Nikos Therapos
Nikos Therapos is the Director of DOTANK Plus, an agency supporting sustainability-focused organizations with capacity building and impact management services. With extensive experience in strategy planning and stakeholder management, Nikos has worked with numerous startups, NGOs, and international organizations on social and climate action projects. His expertise in organizational development and his passion for environmental sustainability make him an invaluable mentor for young leaders working to create a positive environmental impact.
4. Sisay Lukas
Sisay Lukas, a passionate climate and ocean activist, serving as the Founder and Hub Leader of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) Ethiopia Hub. Additionally, He is the Regional Director and in-charge of Partnership at Africa Climate Change Communicator. He has been actively involved in international and regional climate and ocean advocacy, representing my country and continent at major global conferences including the Our Ocean Conference and COP 28. With a background in software engineering, He also serve as a senior software engineer. His focus spans across climate change, ocean protection, and youth empowerment.
5. Patrik Arnold
Founder and CEO of 10 Billion Strong, Patrick Arnold is dedicated to training the next generation of environmental leaders worldwide. His organization works across 50 countries to inspire and equip emerging leaders to protect the planet. Patrick’s extensive career spans international development, education, and environmental advocacy, having worked with institutions like the U.S. Peace Corps, USAID, and the International Crisis Group. A lifelong ocean lover and endurance athlete, Patrick’s passion for sustainable development and youth empowerment shines through his work and leadership.
6. Mark Haver
A fierce advocate for the environment and the rights of future generations, Mark Haver is the founder of BlueGreen Generation, where he amplifies the impact of initiatives focused on the ocean, climate, and sustainable fashion. Mark has played a key role in the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) for over seven years, leading campaigns against deep-sea mining and connecting young ocean leaders to global climate negotiations. As a digital nomad, he brings a global perspective to his work, having supported communities for ocean action across the US and Canada. Mark’s vision and dedication are sure to inspire the next generation of ocean defenders.
7. Hellen Kuria
Hellen Kuria is the Africa Coordinator for the High Seas Alliance (HSA), with over 12 years of experience as a Marine and Environmental Policy and Governance Specialist. With a distinguished track record in Africa, Hellen has dedicated her career to crafting and executing policies that emphasize marine and environment conservation, climate resilience, and ecological sustainability. Her extensive work spans several African nations, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Mozambique, where she has played a pivotal role in advancing financing for Marine and climate diplomacy. Hellen holds an Executive master’s in environmental policy and governance from the Graduate Institute of Geneva, a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies.
8. Forbi Perise
Forbi Perise is a young and dynamic leader committed to the health and sustainability of Africa’s oceans. He is a prominent voice in the fight against plastic pollution and deep-sea mining and serves as the National Coordinator for Greening Forward Cameroon. His work in promoting ocean literacy and marine conservation has earned him international recognition, including prestigious awards like the Diana Award and the UNEP-Tunza Hidden Eco Hero Award. Forbi’s dedication to protecting marine ecosystems and empowering youth across Africa makes him a powerful force for change. Forbi also serves as the African regional representative for Sustainable Ocean Alliance.
9. Jasmine Kavenuke
Jasmine Kavenuke is a United Nations Youth Delegate for Tanzania and the founder of Mojafam Organization, which focuses on achieving key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to gender equality, poverty reduction, and climate action. As a Youth Sounding Board member for the European Union Delegation to Tanzania, Kapwani’s leadership and advocacy have earned her numerous accolades, including the Rising Woman Award and Young Leader of the Year award. Her commitment to youth and women’s empowerment is driving significant progress toward achieving the SDGs.
