As climate change accelerates, the world is turning to nature-based solutions and blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass meadows are at the heart of this movement. These ecosystems not only capture massive amounts of carbon but also protect coastlines, support biodiversity, and sustain local livelihoods.
At SOA Tanzania, we recognize that local youth must be the ones leading this movement. That’s why weβre excited to announce the formation of the SOA Tanzania Blue Carbon & Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) Technical Team a dedicated group of volunteer young professionals who will shape the future of blue carbon conservation and climate action in Tanzania.

This new technical team will:
- Provide research and technical support for blue carbon and NbS projects
- Develop innovative, sustainable solutions rooted in local communities
- Help SOA Tanzania prepare for engagement in the voluntary carbon market
- Strengthen SOA Tanzaniaβs leadership in the global climate conversation
- Develop and scale NbS blue carbon projects
πΉ Available Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities
We are currently seeking 5 dedicated volunteers to serve for a period of 12 month (with annual renewal), contributing around minimum 4β6 hours per week. Each role offers hands-on experience, mentorship, and leadership development.
1. πΏ Team Lead & Coordinator
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate team activities, meetings, and task allocation
- Liaise with SOA Tanzania leadership and external partners
- Support overall vision, strategy, and reporting
- Oversee timelines, communications, and team progress tracking
- Ensure documentation of key outputs and learning
2. π¬ Blue Carbon Research Volunteer
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on blue carbon science and project methodologies
- Compile ecological baselines and case studies
- Support in drafting concept notes and technical briefs
- Assist in identifying potential project sites and data sources
3. π Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) Volunteer
Responsibilities:
- Support the design of a basic MRV framework
- Assist in data collection and organization from pilot sites
- Contribute to maps, visuals, and reports for internal use
- Learn carbon accounting standards and tools
4. π§ Community & Policy Engagement Volunteer
Responsibilities:
- Support community stakeholder mapping and engagement
- Assist in documenting FPIC (Free, Prior and Informed Consent) processes
- Track and summarize policy developments related to carbon, land tenure, and marine conservation in Tanzania
- Contribute to inclusive benefit-sharing model development
5. π’ Communications & Knowledge Sharing Volunteer
Responsibilities:
- Document team progress, learning, and stories from the field
- Create educational content (e.g., infographics, blog posts, short videos)
- Manage basic communications around blue carbon and NbS for social media and reports
- Translate technical information into youth-friendly language
